OUR POSITION

Scendent is about young people getting access to things they were told weren't for them. A website that locks people out would make a liar of us.

We're working toward WCAG 2.2 Level AA. We're not fully there yet, and this page tells you honestly where we stand.

1. WHAT WE AIM FOR

These are the standards we build to. Where the Site falls short of any of them, we treat that as a defect to fix rather than a position to defend.

  • Semantic HTML structure with a logical heading order
  • Alternative text on meaningful images
  • Full keyboard navigation, with visible focus indicators
  • Descriptive link text — no bare "click here"
  • Form labels associated with their inputs, and errors described in text rather than colour alone
  • Responsive layout that works from 320px up
  • Content that reflows at 200% zoom without horizontal scrolling
  • Colour contrast checked for body text and interactive elements
  • No content that flashes more than three times per second

2. WHERE WE CURRENTLY STAND

We have not yet completed a formal accessibility audit, so we are not claiming a conformance level. WCAG 2.2 Level AA is the standard we are working toward. We would rather tell you that honestly than publish a badge we haven't earned.

Known gaps we're aware of and working on:

  • Animated elements — the homepage ghost-text animation and the scrolling ticker do not yet have a user-facing pause control. They do respect the prefers-reduced-motion browser setting.
  • Video content — not all videos have captions or transcripts yet
  • Third-party content — embedded checkout, payment and form components come from Shopify and other providers, and we don't control their accessibility. We raise issues with them when we find them.
  • PDFs — some older downloadable documents aren't fully tagged for screen readers. Ask us and we'll provide an accessible version.

If you find something we haven't listed, please tell us. We'd rather know.

3. THE BRAND AND CONTRAST

Our identity is black, neon green and heavy uppercase type. It's deliberate, and we're keeping it.

Where the aesthetic and accessibility conflict, accessibility wins:

  • Body text is set for readability, not for whatever looked best
  • Uppercase is used for headings and short emphasis, never for long passages — it's measurably harder to read
  • Neon green is never the only way information is conveyed
  • Font sizes are intended to scale with your browser settings

4. ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY

We intend the Site to work with:

  • Screen readers — NVDA, JAWS, VoiceOver, TalkBack
  • Screen magnification and browser zoom to 200%
  • Keyboard-only navigation
  • Voice control software
  • Browser reader modes

5. THE DIRECTORY OF HELP

The Directory gets extra attention, because the people using it are often the least able to fight a bad interface.

  • No account, login or sign-up required
  • Plain-language descriptions, no jargon
  • Crisis contacts in a persistent bar, reachable from anywhere on the page
  • Phone numbers as tappable links on mobile
  • Fully keyboard navigable
  • We aim to keep core content usable without JavaScript
  • Loads on slow connections and older devices

If you have trouble finding help through the Directory because of an accessibility barrier, that's a failure we want to hear about urgently: scendentofficial@gmail.com, subject line ACCESSIBILITY.

6. WORKSHOPS AND EVENTS

Accessibility isn't just a website thing.

  • Tell us your access needs at booking or at least 7 days before, and we'll make reasonable adjustments
  • Support people attend free
  • Materials available in large print, plain text, or digital format on request
  • We'll tell you honestly about venue accessibility before you commit, including anything that doesn't work
  • NZSL interpretation can be arranged with reasonable notice — ask and we'll do our best

7. TELL US WHAT'S BROKEN

If any part of this site or our services is hard to use:

Email: scendentofficial@gmail.com (subject line ACCESSIBILITY)
Phone: 027 726 0101

Please include the page, what you were trying to do, what happened, and the browser or assistive technology you were using.

We aim to acknowledge within 2 working days and tell you what we're doing about it. If we can't fix it quickly, we'll give you the information or service another way in the meantime.

8. IF WE DON'T SORT IT

You can contact the Human Rights Commission:
hrc.co.nz · 0800 496 877 · infoline@hrc.co.nz

9. HOW WE ASSESS THIS

We evaluate through a mix of automated testing, manual keyboard testing, and screen reader testing. We update this statement when the Site changes or when we fix something listed above.

We haven't yet commissioned a formal third-party accessibility audit. It's on the list.

10. THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS

We're a small team. We're not going to claim we've nailed accessibility when we haven't. What we will do is fix what you tell us is broken, and keep this page honest about where we are.
