READ THIS FIRST
Scendent Limited is a New Zealand limited liability company. We are not a registered charity.
We are not registered with Charities Services under the Charities Act 2005, and we are not an approved donee organisation under the Income Tax Act 2007.
What that means for you:
- Your contribution is not tax-deductible
- It does not qualify for the 33.33% donation tax credit
- We cannot issue an IRD donation receipt
- We will send you a payment confirmation, but it is not a donee receipt and IRD will not accept it as one
We could have buried that at the bottom. We've put it at the top because you deserve to decide with the facts in front of you, and because we'd rather lose a contribution than mislead someone into giving.
If a tax credit matters to you, please give to a registered charity instead. You can find one at register.charities.govt.nz. We'd rather you did that than gave to us under a misunderstanding.
If you want to back the work regardless — welcome. That's what this page is for.
1. WHY WE'RE STRUCTURED THIS WAY
Scendent runs as a company that trades — merchandise, workshops, training — and puts the proceeds into youth programmes. We applied for charitable registration and it was not approved.
We're not pretending that's ideal. It means we don't get the tax advantages, and it means you don't either. What it doesn't change is what we actually do with the money, which is set out below.
2. WHAT WE CALL THINGS
Language matters here, so we're being deliberate:
- We say "contribution" or "support", not "donation to our charity"
- We say "funds our programmes", not "tax-deductible donation"
- We don't use the word "charity" to describe Scendent Limited
If you find older wording on our site or materials that doesn't match this, it's out of date — tell us at scendentofficial@gmail.com and we'll fix it.
3. WHAT YOUR CONTRIBUTION FUNDS
Contributions go into programme delivery. In practice that means:
- Scholarship programme — direct financial support for young people
- Workshops and training — including subsidised and free places for young people who couldn't otherwise attend
- Directory of Help — keeping the wellbeing directory free, current and accessible, with no paywall and no sign-up
- Advocate training — developing young people to support their own communities
- Programme delivery costs — facilitators, venues, materials, and the administration that makes the rest possible
We do not have a fixed percentage split, and we're not going to publish a made-up one. Allocation is decided by the directors based on programme need each period.
4. HOW WE REPORT
Because we're not on the Charities Register, our accounts aren't publicly filed there. That's a legitimate transparency gap, so we close it ourselves:
- Any contributor can request a plain-English summary of how contributions were used in a given year. Email scendentofficial@gmail.com and we will provide one. This is a standing commitment, not a maybe.
- We intend to publish an annual programme summary on the Site setting out what was funded and what it delivered
- We name the scholarships and programmes funded, with recipient consent, and never in a way that identifies a young person without their agreement
If we ever stop doing this, hold us to it.
5. HOW TO CONTRIBUTE
- One-off contribution via the Site
- Recurring monthly contribution via the Site
- Buying merchandise or a workshop seat — trading income funds the same programmes
- Corporate partnership or sponsorship — email scendentofficial@gmail.com
- In-kind support — venues, printing, professional services, equipment. Often more useful than cash. Get in touch.
All contributions are processed in New Zealand Dollars (NZD) through Shopify Payments or PayPal. We never see or store your card details.
6. RECURRING CONTRIBUTIONS
- Charged monthly on the date you set it up
- Cancel any time — no notice, no fee, no phone call, no retention script. Use the link in your confirmation email or email scendentofficial@gmail.com
- Cancelling stops future payments; it doesn't refund past ones
- We'll email you before any change to the amount or frequency, and it won't happen without your agreement
- If a payment fails we'll retry once, then email you. We won't keep hammering your card.
7. REFUNDS
Contributions are non-refundable once received, because funds are committed to programme delivery.
We will refund where:
- You were charged in error or charged twice
- You entered the wrong amount and tell us within 30 days
- The payment was unauthorised
- A recurring contribution ran after you cancelled it
Email scendentofficial@gmail.com with the date, amount and reference. We aim to process within 10 working days to the original payment method.
Beyond those cases, if you're in genuine financial hardship and have contributed something you can't afford, email us anyway. We'd rather have the conversation than keep money someone needs.
8. WHO CAN CONTRIBUTE
You must be 18 or over to make a contribution, or have your parent or guardian's consent and use their payment method.
If you're a young person who wants to support Scendent, please don't send us money. Share the Directory of Help with someone who needs it, or come to a workshop. That's worth more to us.
9. CONTRIBUTIONS WE WON'T ACCEPT
We reserve the right to decline or return a contribution where:
- It comes from a source inconsistent with our mission — including tobacco, vaping, gambling, payday lending, or alcohol marketing aimed at young people
- Accepting it would compromise our independence or the integrity of our programmes
- It comes with conditions we can't meet or that would compromise participant safety
- We have reasonable grounds to suspect the funds are not legitimate
- It appears to have been made by a young person without appropriate consent
We'll return declined contributions in full and explain why where we're able to.
10. FUNDRAISING CONDUCT
We commit to:
- Never using pressure, guilt, urgency tactics, or manufactured deadlines
- Never using a young person's story without their free, informed and current consent — and never with their identity attached unless they've specifically agreed to that
- Never sharing, selling or trading contributor details with any other organisation
- Being accurate about what your money does, including when a programme underdelivers
- Making it as easy to stop giving as it was to start
We hold ourselves to the Fair Trading Act 1986 standard on every claim we make about fundraising. If we ever say something misleading, tell us and we'll correct it publicly.
11. YOUR PRIVACY
Contributor information is handled under our Privacy Policy. In short: we keep your name, email, amount and date; we keep it for 7 years for financial record-keeping; we only email you about the work if you've opted in; and we never pass your details to anyone else.
You can ask us to make a contribution anonymously and we'll respect it.
