Workshop, Event & Training Terms

THE SHORT VERSION

Book your seat, turn up, respect the room. Can't make it? Tell us 14+ days out for a full refund, or transfer your seat to someone else up to 48 hours before.

Our sessions are education, not therapy. If you need clinical support, we'll help you find it — see the Directory of Help.

1. WHAT THESE TERMS COVER

These terms apply to every Scendent workshop, event, training session and programme, including Mental Health First Aid training, the Advocate Training Programme, community workshops, and corporate and organisational bookings.

They sit alongside our Terms of Service, Refund & Returns Policy, Privacy Policy, Child & Youth Safety Policy and Community Guidelines. Where these terms conflict with the general Terms of Service, these terms win for sessions.

By booking, you agree to them — for yourself, and for any under-18 you're booking on behalf of.

2. THESE SESSIONS ARE EDUCATION, NOT TREATMENT

Read this properly. It matters.

Scendent workshops are educational and developmental. They are not therapy, counselling, clinical treatment, or a mental health assessment.

  • Facilitators deliver education. Unless we specifically say otherwise for a named session, they are not acting as registered clinicians.
  • Nothing in a session is a diagnosis, a treatment plan, or personal clinical advice.
  • Attending does not create a clinical or therapeutic relationship.
  • Do not stop, change or delay any treatment because of something covered in a session. Talk to your own health professional.

Mental Health First Aid and similar training teaches you how to recognise distress and support someone toward professional help. It does not qualify you as a mental health professional and it does not authorise you to provide treatment.

If you're currently unwell, please consider whether a session is right for you now, and talk to your health professional first. We'd rather you came when it's genuinely good for you.

3. THE CONTENT CAN BE HEAVY

Our sessions discuss mental health, wellbeing, adversity and — depending on the session — suicide, self-harm, substance use, trauma and abuse.

This content can be distressing, particularly if you have lived experience.

  • Session pages describe the content in advance. Read them.
  • You may step out at any time, without explanation and without judgement.
  • Support information is available at every session and in our Directory of Help.
  • If you're unsure whether a session is safe for you right now, email us before booking and we'll talk it through honestly.

Scendent is not a crisis service. If you're in crisis, call 111, or call or text 1737 — free, 24/7.

4. BOOKING

Booking is an offer, confirmed when we send your confirmation email. Seats are limited and allocated in order of confirmed payment.

We may decline a booking where the session is full, prerequisites aren't met, the participant is outside the age range, or a previous breach of these terms makes it inappropriate. We'll refund in full.

Payment is required in full at booking unless we've agreed otherwise in writing. All prices are in NZD and include GST where applicable.

Confirmation and joining instructions are emailed to the address on your booking. If nothing arrives within 24 hours, check spam, then email us. It's your responsibility to give us a working email address and to check it.

5. UNDER-18 PARTICIPANTS

Under-18s are welcome at sessions marked as open to them.

Required before participation:

  • Written parent or guardian consent
  • Emergency contact details
  • Disclosure of any medical, accessibility or support needs relevant to safety
  • Agreement to our Child & Youth Safety Policy

Guardians are told in advance what will be covered, where, when, who is facilitating, and how to raise a concern.

Guardians must be contactable for the duration of the session. Some sessions require a guardian to remain on site — we'll say so clearly when that's the case.

Photography consent is separate and optional. Refusing has no effect on participation.

6. ACCESSIBILITY AND SUPPORT NEEDS

Tell us at booking, or at least 7 days before the session, about anything we can do to make it work for you — accessibility, communication, dietary, or support needs.

We'll make reasonable adjustments. Where we can't, we'll tell you honestly before the session rather than let you turn up to something that doesn't work.

Support people are welcome at no charge for participants who need one. Let us know so we can plan the room.

7. HOW WE EXPECT PEOPLE TO BEHAVE

Our sessions run on the S-Code. In a room where people share real things, that's not decoration — it's what makes it safe.

Everyone attending agrees to:

  • Treat every participant and facilitator with respect
  • Keep what's shared in the room, in the room. What others disclose is theirs, not yours to repeat.
  • Let people speak without interruption or judgement
  • Respect that people participate at different levels — nobody has to share
  • Follow reasonable facilitator instructions, including safety instructions
  • Arrive on time and stay for the session

Not acceptable:

  • Harassment, bullying, intimidation or threats
  • Discrimination on any basis — including ethnicity, gender, sexuality, disability, faith or age
  • Disclosing or repeating what another participant shared
  • Recording, photographing or filming without express permission
  • Attending under the influence of alcohol or drugs
  • Behaviour that makes the space unsafe for others
  • Using the session to promote a business, product, service or belief

We may remove anyone breaching these standards, without refund. In serious cases we may decline future bookings and, where warranted, report to the appropriate authority. Facilitators have final say on the safety of the room, and that decision isn't up for debate in the moment.

Confidentiality is not absolute. If a facilitator becomes aware that someone is at risk of serious harm, they will act to keep that person safe, including contacting emergency services, a guardian, or Oranga Tamariki. We'd rather have an awkward conversation than a preventable tragedy.

8. CANCELLATIONS AND TRANSFERS

If you cancel

Notice before the session Refund
14 days or more 100%
7–13 days 50%, or 100% credit toward a future session
Under 7 days No refund — transfer your seat instead
No-show No refund

Transferring your seat

Up to 48 hours before, transfer to someone else free of charge. Email their name and contact details. They must meet any prerequisites and agree to these terms.

If we cancel or reschedule

Full refund, or free transfer to another date — your choice. If we reschedule and the new date doesn't suit, full refund.

We are not liable for travel, accommodation or other costs. Please don't book non-refundable travel until we've confirmed the session is running.

Life happens

Illness, bereavement, family emergency — talk to us. We'll find a way. The table above is a framework, not a wall.

9. CORPORATE AND ORGANISATIONAL BOOKINGS

Corporate bookings are quoted individually and governed by a separate written booking agreement, which overrides this section where they differ.

General position:

  • Deposit of 50% to confirm the date, non-refundable
  • Balance due 14 days before delivery
  • Cancellation within 21 days of the date: 50% of the total fee payable
  • Cancellation within 7 days: full fee payable
  • Travel, accommodation and venue costs are additional unless quoted otherwise
  • Minimum and maximum participant numbers apply per session type

Corporate bookings are business-to-business supplies. The parties agree that goods and services are supplied for business purposes and that the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 does not apply (ss 43(2), 43(2A)).

10. MATERIALS AND INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY

All session content, workbooks, slides, frameworks, exercises and recordings are the intellectual property of Scendent Limited or its licensors.

You may: use materials for your own personal learning and reference.

You may not: reproduce, distribute, publish, sell, or use them commercially; deliver Scendent content as your own training; record any session without written permission.

Certification. Where a session leads to a certificate, it is issued to the named participant only, confirms attendance and completion, is not transferable, and does not constitute a professional qualification or registration unless explicitly stated on the certificate itself.

11. HEALTH, SAFETY AND VENUES

  • Follow all venue safety instructions and emergency procedures
  • Tell us about any medical condition that could affect your safety at the session
  • You are responsible for your own property. We're not liable for loss or damage to personal belongings.
  • We may adjust or halt a session where there's a risk to health or safety

Online sessions: you're responsible for your own device, internet connection and a private space. We're not liable for your technical issues. If our platform fails and we can't deliver, you get a transfer or a refund.

12. YOUR PRIVACY

Handled under our Privacy Policy. Specific to sessions:

  • Health and support information you give us is used only to run the session safely, shared only with your facilitator, and deleted within 30 days of the session
  • Attendance records are kept for 2 years
  • Participant lists are never shared with other participants without consent
  • What you share in the room is not recorded by us

13. LIABILITY

Nothing in this clause limits your rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or Fair Trading Act 1986 if you're a consumer, or our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, or for fraud.

Subject to that, and to the maximum extent permitted by law:

  • Sessions are educational. We do not guarantee any particular outcome, improvement or result.
  • We're not liable for any decision you make, or action you take, based on session content
  • We're not liable for the conduct of other participants
  • We're not liable for indirect or consequential loss
  • Our total aggregate liability is limited to the fee you paid for the session

You participate at your own discretion. If you have a health condition that could be affected, get professional advice before attending.

14. IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG

Tell us within 14 days: scendentofficial@gmail.com, subject line BOOKING. We aim to acknowledge within 5 working days and respond substantively within 20.

If a session wasn't delivered with reasonable care and skill, you have rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act, and we'll sort it — refund, partial refund, or a place on another session.

For safeguarding concerns, email scendentofficial@gmail.com with subject line SAFEGUARDING — see our Child & Youth Safety Policy.

Unresolved? Disputes Tribunal (disputestribunal.govt.nz) or Commerce Commission (comcom.govt.nz · 0800 943 600).

15. GENERAL

Governed by New Zealand law. We may update these terms; the version in force when you book is the version that applies to your booking. If any provision is unenforceable it's severed and the rest continues.
